What is the Dragon Challenge?

The Dragon Challenge is a physical literacy assessment consisting of nine stations that measure different fundamental motor skills of children and identifies areas of strength and improvement. It is a fast way to test students' motor skills, requiring a short practice (~5 minutes) before completing the activity (~2-3 minutes)

What is Physical Literacy?
Physical literacy is the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person (SHAPE America). Motor skills are the foundation of physical literacy and the Dragon Challenge provides a way to assess them.

Fun for Every Child

The Dragon Challenge resembles an obstacle course to students. Each station is unique and assesses a particular skill. The challenge is designed for the students to have fun during the assessment and to reduce teacher burden.

Who, When, Where?

  • Students in grades 3-6
  • ~5 minutes per student (in separate groups) - 1-2 days in a gym space
  • Minimal equipment

Get Involved

We are currently looking for schools to pilot the Dragon Challenge. If you are interested in getting involved, contact Matt Earney at mearney@iastate.edu.
